Eliana Johnson #3- Art Nouveau

  •  Art Nouveau VS Arts and Crafts
    • Arts and Crafts was inspired by medieval history and did not embrace the manufacturing process
    • Art Nouveau was not based on traditional or historical design, but by nature, it embraced technology and manufacturing process
  • Art Nouveau
    • Means new art
    • Rejection of Academic models/ history to using nature as an inspiration for design
    • nature was used as a source of inspiration for design
  • Aubrey Beardsley
    • black and white on white paper
    • influenced by Japanese artwork

    •                                                          The Peacock Skirt
  • Art Nouveau
    • Started in Britain and spread to Belgium and France
      • Germany, Spain, and Scandinavian countries were also affected
    • Characteristics
      • Rejection of Victorian Style and any imitation of historical style
      • Decorative Ornamentation based on nature forms
      • Modern materials and techniques
      • curvilinear forms as dominant

  • France
    • Paris and Nancy were the major cities and centers of Art Nouveau
    • Major Designers:
      • Emile Galle was trained in botany and mineralogy and was a master craftsman in glass
      • Louis Majorette studied painting at Ecole des Beaux Arts and was a specialist in furniture design and decoration
  • Spain
    • Antoni Gaudi
      • used flowing curves and unusual decorative details to create structures that resembled nature-based fantasy

  • Modern Applications:
    • Most modern applications are used in contemporaty artworks but there are a few modern version in interior design such as this house below
  • One Step Further:
    • My personal favorite example of the Art Nouveau Movement was the use of it in the Lord of the Rings trilogy movies, specifically seen in the scenes set in Rivendell, the home of the Elves. The nature and nature motifs used in this architecture showcase the Art Nouveau Movement while also combining it with a bit of Celtic design.

  1. It's interesting how this movement was a rejection to the victorian and Arts and Crafts era's and embraced the Japanese style. This movement truly seems like fantasy so I love that you compared it to the Lord of the Rings Trilogy! Overall, great job!

  4. Eliana- beautiful Blog entry. The way you summarize the Art Nouveau movement and the various countries that promoted it was comprehensive and interesting. You covered both art and interiors. Your images were excellent. Your modern day applications were also fascinating. I love your "one step further" which explored the setting of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The mix of AN and Celtic design are so wonderful! 50/50 total points
